The solar new year: the Sun returning to the first degree of Mesha. The date given is the day the ingress itself falls on, which is how the sankranti is normally listed. The regional new years all track this same moment but each applies its own cutoff for attributing an evening ingress to a day, so Vishu, Puthandu, Baisakhi and Pohela Boishakh can each land a day either side of it.
