What is Choghadiya?

Choghadiya is a simple muhurta system that splits each day and night into eight parts and labels every part good, neutral or bad. It is widely used in western India for quick day-planning.

Eight parts, day and night

From sunrise to sunset the day is divided into eight choghadiya of roughly 90 minutes each; sunset to next sunrise gives eight more. Each is ruled by one of the seven planets.

Good and bad labels

The seven choghadiya names carry a fixed quality: Amrit, Shubh, Labh and Char are favourable, while Rog, Kaal and Udveg are avoided. The starting label depends on the weekday, and the sequence then rotates in a fixed order.

How to use it

Pick an Amrit/Shubh/Labh window for starting work, travel or purchases. Char is considered neutral-to-good for movement. It is a lightweight alternative to a full muhurta calculation.
