Kharmas, also called Malamas, is the Sun's passage through Dhanu or Meena — the two solar months that end at the Makara and Mesha sankrantis. New ventures, marriages and housewarmings are traditionally deferred until the Sun moves on, which is why each spell closes precisely at a sankranti rather than at a tithi. Being solar, its dates barely move from year to year, unlike the tithi-based periods.
