Rath Yatra

The chariot procession at Puri, when Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra travel from the temple to the Gundicha temple on three enormous wooden chariots pulled by hand.

Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya, the second day of the bright fortnight of Ashadha. The tithi itself is ordinary; what makes the festival unusual is everything hung off it — the whole Puri sequence is counted forward from this date, so the surrounding observances move with it rather than having tithis of their own.
