Snana Yatra

The ceremonial bathing of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra at Puri with 108 pots of water, after which the deities are held to fall ill and go into seclusion until Rath Yatra.

Jyeshtha Shukla Purnima — the full moon of Jyeshtha, taken as the day the full-moon tithi is running at sunrise. It opens the Puri sequence: the fortnight of seclusion that follows is why Rath Yatra lands on Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya rather than immediately after.

• Puri keeps this on the sunrise-prevailing (udaya vyapini) full moon, which is why it can fall a day after Vat Purnima even though both are Jyeshtha Purnima — 2024 is such a year (Vat Purnima 21 June, Snana Yatra 22 June).
• In a year with an adhik Jyeshtha the nija month is taken, and where the full-moon tithi spans two sunrises the first is taken.
